Junior Council
Empowering young voices, building leaders, shaping Mandurah’s future together.
The City of Mandurah Junior Council was first established in 1984 to provide young people with a meaningful voice in their community and to give them insight into the functions of local government. Today, the Junior Council is made up of two Year 6 representatives from each of Mandurah’s 21 primary schools.
Throughout their term, members learn about the different levels of government, the operations of local council, and the responsibilities of civic leadership. They participate in mock council meetings, elections, and discussions that build their understanding of community responsibility and the importance of active participation. Each year, the Junior Council undertakes a significant project that reflects an issue important to young people in Mandurah. Members research their chosen topic, develop a purposeful initiative, and deliver it proudly to benefit their community.
Participating in the Junior Council is an invaluable opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and make a meaningful contribution to the future of their community.
